Bill Smith has been a fixture of the Lancaster running community for decades, both as a competitor and a builder of races. He was one of the first members of the Lancaster Road Runners Club and has remained deeply involved in the local running scene ever since. The Red Rose Run has been held for 42 years, and in 2016 — marking the race's 40th running — Smith was one of only three runners to have competed in every single edition.
Beyond his own racing achievements, Smith created the Smith's Challenge, a 10K trail run covering hills, valleys, and streams, which has now been held for 30 years.
