In the early 1950s Clyde Butz played football, basketball and baseball at Lancaster Catholic HS, earning All-Star accolades in football and basketball. In baseball he was one of five Lancaster County American Legion baseball players to be selected by major league baseball scouts to play at Connie Mack Stadium in the East-West All-Star Game.

Butz earned a scholarship to Massanutten Military Academy, where he played football, basketball and baseball. At Massanutten he was named the school’s all-around athlete for 1955. He went on to the University of Florida where he played football until a knee injury kept him off the field. Butz coached youth baseball in Marietta and youth football at Donegal.
