H. Billy Haverstick was considered the most accomplished golfer Lancaster County has ever produced, A 5 x Lancaster County Amateur champion. Haverstick also captured three Pennsylvania amateur championships in 1938, 1948, and 1950, and the prestigious Sunnehannna Amateur tournament in 1946 and 1947. Billy played in 16 Amateur and six U.S. Opens, and in 1953 at THE U,.S open he led after 36 holes and finished 2nd low amateur. In the 1948 state amateur championship at the Lancaster Country Club  Haverstick beat a younger golfer from Pittsburgh named Arnold Palmer.
