Three young women from Lancaster County took to the world stage during the Olympic Games in Paris. And archer Casey Kaufhold, right, of Lancaster, brought home a medal.
Brooke DeBerdine, left, and sister Emma DeBerdine, center, of Millersville, were members of the United States field hockey team.
Kaufhold, ranked No. 1 in the world among recurve women, came up short of the podium in the team and individual competition, but found success in her last competition, mixed team with Brady Ellison. After losing in the semifinals, they won the bronze medal match against India. Ellison went on to win silver in the men's competition.
Kaufhold competed in the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo, reaching the second round in individual competition.
The DeBerdines, both midfielders, played at Penn Manor High School and the University of Maryland and have been members of the U.S. national team for a few years. They still had to qualify for the Olympic team, which was trimmed from 28 players to 16.
The USA team finished ninth with a win and draw among its 5 matches.
Prior to the Olympics, Brooke played in her 50th event with the national team against Great Britain earlier this year. USA Field Hockey lists a silver medal at the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago among Emma's top accomplishments.
