Columbia High School 1953. For the Columbia on the football team in 1952 he led the county in points scored with 100 and ran for 1,512 yards on 200 caries or 7.6 yards per carry. He also ran track for the Crimson Tide and at the District 3 championship won the 100, 200 and the mile relay.
He coached football for 33 years. At Columbia High School his record was 106-82-4. He also was the head track coach, and his 1975 track team won a Class B state championship. He left Columbia and became the head football coach at Hempfield, where he compiled a record of 98-49-1. His career football coaching record was 206-131-5. He was coach of the year six times.
He went to William & Mary College on a football scholarship and was inducted into the William & Mary Hall of Fame.
